What You Should Eat For Optimum Health

Author : Gregg Hall

We often wonder what we should eat for optimum health and even the government has recently flip flopped its food pyramid which you can see at MyPyramid gov

Here’s an overview of the 2005 dietary guidelines from the government

First off, according to the new government guidelines a healthy diet is one that emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and fat-free or low-fat milk products and will include lean meats, poultry, fish, eggs, and nuts

The diet will also be low in saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol, salt, and added sugars

The main theme the government is proposing now is to eat a diet rich in grains and to make half of the grains you eat whole grains Whole grains contain the entire grain kernel — the bran, germ, and endosperm, some examples would be:

– whole-wheat flour

– bulgur (cracked wheat)

– oatmeal

– whole cornmeal

– brown rice

Next you should “vary your veggies” and in general buy fresh vegetables in season, stock up on frozen vegetables and buy vegetables that are easy to prepare

For the best nutritional value, choose vegetables with more potassium such as sweet potatoes and spinach and limit sauces which can add fats, sodium and additional calories

Prepare more of your foods from fresh ingredients to lower sodium Most sodium comes from packaged and processed foods

One suggestion for a healthy diet is to try using a salad as the main dish for lunch and go light on the salad dressing

Focus on fruits To help you keep focus, have a bowl of fruit always available on the table, counter, or in the refrigerator Keep cut fruit in the refrigerator and buy fresh fruits in season whenever possible Buy frozen, dried, and canned fruits as well so you will always have some kind of fruit on hand

Choose whole fruits or cut fruits over juices whenever possible for the fiber benefits Choose fruits high in potassium such as bananas, apricots, and cantaloupe Put cut fruit on your breakfast cereal At lunch, take a tangerine, banana, or some grapes For dinner, add crushed pineapple or mandarin oranges in a tossed salad

Get calcium rich foods and include low fat or fat free milk as a beverage at meals Have fat-free yogurt as a snack Use low-fat cheeses on salads and casseroles

For those who cannot consume milk products due to lactose intolerance choose lactose free alternatives to get your calcium such as cheese, yogurt, and lactose-free milk

Go lean with protein The suggestions for your protein intake are to use the leanest cuts of meats such as top sirloin and pork loin and whenever choosing ground beef go with extra lean that is identified as at least 90% lean

Buy skinless chicken parts as the fat is in the skin Choose lean turkey and all kinds of fish

To keep your meat intake lean and as free of fat as possible, broil, grill, roast, or boil your meat choices instead of frying and drain off any fat that appears during cooking

Choose dry beans such as kidney beans and use them as the main part of a meal often Make use of nuts for snacks and use them to sometimes replace meat or poultry

We all love throwing parties on special occasions and want it to be a great success Planning a party is the most difficult part You can get ideas from other parties that you have attended, but always make sure that you never emulate the ideas or themes The best part about your party should be the originality and the uniqueness, making people remember it for a long time However, big successful parties demand a lot of money and heavy expenditure, which is not possible for most of us Thus it is important to plan the budget before organizing the party

To begin with, you should always lay down a practical budget and stick to it You can ask your friends to help you organize and plan the party Your friends who are creative can give you unique ideas, which can be used for the party If they are good artists, ask them to design or create reasonable invitation cards If you are having a theme party, your artistic friends can make a huge backdrop for the party making it look very different

Friends who are disc jockeys or have an incredible music collection or a karaoke machine can help you with setting up the music for the party If you are falling short of lights to decorate your venue, request your friends to lend you their Christmas lights, instead of buying more lights The best way to cut down the expenses is to borrow from friends and family

Usually during parties, we spend an enormous amount of money on food Thus another way to cut down the expenses of your party is to limit the amount to be spent on food You should throw your party at a time of the day when people have already eaten For instance a party after lunch will be very reasonable, as you can offer only snacks, which will help reduce the cost of the party Or a late night party, when people have already finished their diner is also a good choice If you are serving only snacks, they can be made at home, to cut the costs further The key is to serve simple and easy snacks

Decorating the venue also demands a lot of money Thus you should keep the theme simple and innovative, to avoid heavy expenditure You could decorate your party with streamers, balloons, ribbons and so on, which are very cost effective If you have Christmas lights at home, they can be used in making the place look very bright Always use your imagination and creativity to cut down on the expenditure and use as many substitutions as you can

An expensive party doesn’t always have to be successful The important factor of a party is to have fun, which is possible even in low budget parties You just have to be creative, original and well organized to have a successful party

How To Taste Wine Like A Pro

Author : Gregg Hall

Nobody likes to look like an amateur when doing anything and wine tasting is no exception By simply following a few guidelines you can look as if you have been to dozens of wine tastings even if you don’t know a cabernet sauvignon from a pinot noir Chances are that no one is going to come up and ask you to be a head judge!

The first step to tasting wine is a visual one, fill the wine glass to no more than half full at most, one third is better Secondly, hold the wine glass by the stem so as not to influence the taste by heating it with the heat from your hand and also so that you are able to better see the wine Observe the intensity of the color as well as how transparent the wine is When observing the intensity you should look at it from above

Now comes the fun part, swirl the wine in the glass to prepare it for tasting The wine will leave small traces inside the glass, the more alcohol the more traces it will leave Next, observe the color which shows the variety of grape that the wine comes from Generally speaking you will find a cabernet sauvignon is usually violet to dark while pinot noir is more of a ruby color

The color of a wine is also determined by the conditions of the climate during the season of growing and harvesting that the grapes went through For example a very hot summer combined with a dry fall will produce full ripe grapes with a very dark color while a cooler summer and wet fall will give more undeveloped grapes which are much lighter The type of wine making process has a lot to do with the color as well; red wine is fermented with the skin and the longer the process the darker the wine ends up

The age of a wine also tells its color When a wine is young it is full of coloring agents that make it denser and rich looking and as time goes by these agents are affected by chemical reactions that result in sediment being formed at the bottom and the color lightens up When you see a wine with a lot of sediment at the bottom you can usually assume that it is older and has been aging for quite awhile

So there you have it a basic overview of wine tasting that will at least give you some semblance of knowing what you are doing, so enjoy!

Making your own wine or brewing your own beer at home is a very interesting hobby and it can be even a profitable hobby if you are a smart investor in the right winemaking supplies In this article we will point you in the right direction

Free fruit

If you grow your own fruits, wine making is not an expensive hobby at all, its true you need some proper winemaking supplies but when you do some research you can get your supplies very cheap Producing your own fruits is a good step in the right direction but there are other ways to get fruit for free If you offer your fruit and vegetable supplier one or two bottles of wine in return of the fruit he did not sell you will probably end up with more fruits then you can use And because fruits are the most expensive part of winemaking supplies you need, it is a great way to keep the cost of your hobby down And belief me, when you bring those wonderful bottles of wine to your supplier, he will also be happy that he gave those left over fruits to you You can even make a deal with him and let him sell your bottles of wines That is a win win situation for the both of you

Winemaking Equipment

The other big investment you need to make in winemaking supplies is the equipment you need for the wine production I will let you in on a secret, most wine making kits that people get for Christmas never get used, most of the time they end up at e bay or other auction sites People buy these kits for there loved ones to give them a nice hobby but in fact the gift receivers never asked for it and they are not really interested So after a while they sell the stuff and you can buy it at very low prices And because you do like wine making as a hobby but also would like to make a little money this is an opportunity you really can not let go This is the smart way to get winemaking supplies cheap

Save money on wine bottles and wine labels

To get you started you can collect the bottles from people you know, clean them with special sanitizer, make your own labels at the myownlabels website and fill them with your own home made wine When you do decide to sell your wines you can even make a deal with the buyers, under the name of sustainability, so they bring you the bottles back when they finished the wine

There are two ways to produce wine labels, you can buy label making kits that provide you with software and paper you can print them on Or you can create wine labels online and they are professionally printed for you and delivered at your doorstep Strange enough this is often cheaper then using the label kits Wine labels give your wine presentation flair and the air of professionally

These are just a few tips to make your wine making hobby profitable with smart invested winemaking supplies

Root beer is a very common beverage that can come in an alcoholic and non alcoholic versions In the old days it was traditionally used as an herbal medicine If yo look at the history of this soft drink you will see that there have always been mildly alcoholic variations The medicinal properties of the original root beer was for the treatment of coughing or mouth sores The mildly alcoholic version is made by adding sugar and yeast to the extract so there can be some fermenting This will give you an alcohol percentage of about 0 4 , compare this with the more normal 4 in most beers these days and you will agree that 0 4 is mild

It is not that hard to make root beer at home and when you start out with an extract and leave the mixing of your own flavors until later it will only be easier Before 1960 most of the root beers were made with Sassafras tree roots, but then is was outlawed because it was deemed that this ingredient would cause cancer

Nowadays making this type of beverage includes ingredients like wintergreen with vanilla, licorice, sarsaparilla and ginger mixed in Using an extract on the other hand is the easiest way and the one we would recommend when you are starting out with this hobby The preferred extract would be the type that is sold at most brewing outlets and not the type you can get at grocery stores Get yourself a container that can hold about five gallons of water and in which you can put that to a boil but still have enough room to ad sugar and other ingredients

The extract from the supplier will often have a recipe accompanying it which tells you how much needs to be added to the boiling, sugar holding, water But once you start getting the hang of making root beer you will start to experiment a little and taste the mixture and add more or less extract as you go along

Getting some bubbles in the mix

Maybe you would like your root beer with bubbles, this means that it needs to be carbonated, then you will have to put some yeast in the mixture Often you will hear that you need to add champagne yeast but if you were to ask it some home made root beer makers with some more experience they will probably tell you to use ale yeast The problem with champagne yeast is that it lives much longer under pressure which can cause your bottles to burst

The fizz will get in there because the yeast will react with the sugar once it is added to the flavored mix You should have some patience then it will take a minimum of 12 hours to get some good carbonation in the home made root beer When the kick is not there you should let it rest for another 12 hours to ferment Once this is done you are ready to bottle the beverage

Always sterilize the bottle beforehand so you prevent any bacteria getting in Keep the bottles chilled Keep in mind that making home made root beer is a lot of fun and it s something you could do with all the family

The Effects Of Alcohol Consumption On Our Society

Author : Alisha Dhamani

Drinking during pregnancy raises the risk of low-birthweight babies and intrauterine growth retardation, increasing the danger of infection, feeding difficulties, and long-term developmental problems Heavy drinking during the early months of pregnancy can result in the birth of babies with fetal alcohol syndrome Drinking alcohol while skiing, for example, increases the risk of hypothermia

Alcohol is one of the strongest stimulants of these receptors we know of Each time you drink, it turns the pleasure on Alcohol is a problem if it causes problems in any part of your life This includes your health, your work and your life at home Alcohol is there to help Whatever modestly ironic intelligence put the planet together decreed that from decay comes the means to keep decay at bay

Alcohol is a classic depressant of the central nervous system In small amounts, alcohol can cause an apparent stimulation in some people Alcohol is not an antidote for snake bite It does not prevent colds Alcohol is really a natural product that is created by the process of fermentation Fermentation is what occurs when yeast and the sugar from vegetables and grains change the sugar (in the vegetables and grains) into alcohol

Alcohol is removed from the body through the normal routes of excretion as part of this process During periods of high BAC, about 5 percent of the alcohol is excreted in breath and another 5 percent in urine, with negligible amounts excreted in sweat and feces Alcohol is the dirtiest drug we have It permeates and damages all tissue Alcohol is a drug It is a depressant, a downer, which means that it has a tranquilizing effect on people

Alcohol is an unusual depressant At first, drinking makes you feel good Alcohol is metabolized in the liver by enzymes, however, the liver can only metabolize a small amount of alcohol at a time, leaving the excess alcohol to circulate throughout the body The intensity of the effect of alcohol on the body is directly related to the amount consumed

Alcohol is underestimated as a cause of cancer in many parts of the world A sizeable proportion of cancer today is due to alcohol intake and this is increasing in many regions, particularly in east Asia and eastern Europe

Alcohol is in drinks like beer, wine, liquor, wine coolers, whiskey, liqueurs, and even some coffee drinks If you are not sure whether the drink you are going to have has alcohol in it, check the label Alcohol is a drug, and it is the drug most abused by teens

Many kids have their first drink at an early age, as young as 10 or 11 or even younger Alcohol is absorbed into your bloodstream quickly The absorption rate depends on the amount and type of food in your stomach

Alcohol is rich in calories and can provide substantial amounts of energy However, if it constitutes the primary source of calories in place of food, the body will lack vitamins, minerals, and other essential nutrients

Your family is not alone if most of your meals consist of pizza, burgers, and chicken purchased at fast food chains You can’t drive down a street without seeing a fast food place, and it’s that convenience they rely on With our fast-paced lives, it is easy to make a stop at a drive-thru window, as opposed to going home at the end of the day and making a meal With this mindset, it’s no wonder that obesity is a huge problem facing a great deal of families these days, as fast food is usually full of fat and salt, not to mention lacking in vitamins and minerals

There are many alternatives, however, which are much healthier and are still as convenient as going through a drive-thru window at your favorite fast food restaurant More and more food companies are making ready to eat meals, or at least ready to heat meals, which are much healthier and provide more variety than relying on that burger place down the road when you’re short on time Check out your grocer’s freezer section, and make sure to go down the prepared food aisle By making one trip to the grocery store, rather than several trips to the local fast food establishment, you can save money on gas as well Your budget and your family, and perhaps your waistline, will thank you for choosing this route

Sometimes, though, there really is no choice but to eat out Thankfully, restaurants are attempting to provide more healthful choices besides the standard burger and French fries It is not uncommon to have a choice of a side salad, baked potato, or even baked potato chips to replace your fries They also offer full-size salads, which are definitely more healthful, as long as you don’t go overboard on the toppings! If you’re tired of burgers, you could always try the grilled chicken sandwiches, wraps, or deli style sandwiches, which are often lower in fat But it’s still a good idea to limit your fast food meals to special treats, as nothing really replaces the nutrition of a home cooked meal

By choosing to prepare a home cooked meal for your family, not only will you be doing something to stem the obesity epidemic in this country, you will also be getting to spend valuable time with them Think of how much more fun it is to sit around a table and talk about your day, rather than standing in line or waiting in your car at a fast food place By being more proactive in your approach to meals, you will be able to provide more healthful choices, and possibly get in some valuable together time you might miss out on It’s really a win-win situation all around, so it can’t hurt to stop by your local grocer and see what they have to offer
