Eating Healthy — Chocolate Replacement
Author: Chris Brown Title: Eating Healthy — Chocolate Replacement Article: Chocolate. It is one of our favorite pastimes! Every season we wrap it up differently. We see it wrapped as a heart or egg or pumpkin or turkey or Christmas tree. Sometimes we eat it. Sometimes we drink it. We can even cook with it. We can mix it with caramel or peanut butter or have it by itself. Any way you look at it, chocolate is a delicious treat that is always there.
In an effort to be healthy, I have had to give up this wonderful food. Why? It contains caffeine. What a sad day that was when I realized I wouldn’t be able to eat chocolate anymore. What is a person to do? I couldn’t go through life depriving myself, right?
The good news: I found a chocolate replacement: Carob Powder!
Carob is very healthy. It is loaded with calcium! Carob contains 352 mg per 100 grams; whereas, milk contains 120-130 mg of calcium per 100 grams. For those of you watching your calories, carob contains about 60% less calories than chocolate. It is also high in phosphorus, potassium and magnesium. Carob has approximately 8% protein and contains vitamins A, B, B2, B3 and D.
Carob is also significantly different to chocolate’s chemical make up. That is good news for those of you that are allergic to chocolate. It has been found that people with allergic reactions to chocolate, do not have the same reactions to carob!
Carob does not contain caffeine or theobromine. Both of those are stimulants which can be addictive and cause allergies. That takes all the fun out of eating chocolate, doesn’t it?
Carob Powder is a wonderful chocolate replacement. In recipes, it can be replaced for cocoa or chocolate. To replace cocoa in a recipe, it is a 1:1 ratio. To replace chocolate in a recipe, you can use 3 T. of Carob for every square of chocolate.
Now, I have a wonderful, healthy alternative to chocolate. I use carob powder to make hot chocolate. I use it for my kids when they want chocolate milk. I use it in baking when I am making chocolate treats. It’s one more way that I can be healthy and still eat all the great things that life has to offer!
As always, when cooking use the best ingredients you can afford. Buy organic whenever possible. Do your best to keep those nasty toxins out of your diet. Use raw and unprocessed whenever possible. Eat healthy, feel healthy, be healthy. Enjoy life.
