Title: 4 Fun Vitamin B12 (Cobalamin) Facts

Article: Vitamin B12 (also known as cobalamin) is a B-complex vitamin. It is mainly responsible for producing DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) and RNA (ribonucleic acid) both of which contain important genetic information that is needed for the formation of new cells. However, there is plenty more to B12 than this. In this article I am going to be discussing this vitamin in greater detail by providing you with four fun vitamin B12 facts.

1) IT HELPS YOUR BODY PRODUCE HORMONES:- Vitamin B12 plays a key role in the production of melatonin, myonin and serotonin. All three perform important functions in the body. Melatonin helps you fall asleep and promotes healthy sleep cycles Myonin provides protection for the nerves. Serotonin can improve your mood. Therefore, consumption of cobalamin is essential for the overall good health which these articles provide.

2) ANIMAL PRODUCTS ARE THE RICHEST SOURCE:- Animal products are the best source of vitamin B12. Fish, liver and dairy products (including cheese, eggs and milk) are all good choices with each containing particularly high levels of this vitamin. However, since cobalamin is mainly found in animal products vegans may struggle to get enough and may need to take B12 supplements.

3) STOMACH PROBLEMS CAN LEAD TO A DEFICIENCY:- Dietary deficiencies of this vitamin are quite rare. However, your body requires a substance called intrinsic factor to be present in the intestine so that it can be properly absorbed. If you have stomach problems then your body may not be able to produce enough intrinsic factor and this can lead to a vitamin B12 deficiency. Therefore, if you have any stomach problems that you are aware of you should go consult your doctor and see if cobalamin deficiency is likely to be a problem for you.

4) A DEFICIENCY HAS CAN LEAD TO PERNICIOUS ANEMIA:- If you do become deficient in cobalamin it can cause pernicious anemia. This type of anemia causes you to have fewer, larger red blood cells. It ultimately makes walking and balancing difficult, causes you to become weak and causes permanent nerve damage. Therefore, to avoid pernicious anemia make sure that you consume enough vitamin B12 daily. If you are susceptible to stomach problems which cause you to become B12 deficient then you may need to take supplements too.

As you can see vitamin B12 is essential for good health. I hope this article has given you a better understanding of this vitamin and its role in the body. Fundraising Under California SB-12

Title: Fundraising Under California SB-12

Article: Obesity is on the rise in the United States of America and the most alarming thing is that kids are the ones who are falling prey to it. This is in fact the result of an unhealthy lifestyle and improper food habits. Therefore there has been an organized attempt by parents, teachers and the state governments to look into this matter. While parents and teachers are looking after the day to day dietary requirements of a child, the government on its part is looking into the health laws. Chocolate fundraising has been prohibited in several parts of the country. The state of California has been one of the pioneers in the imposition of one such statute and it is known as California SB-12. School fundraising in California has to comply with the standards set by California SB-12.

Obesity is caused as a result of an imbalance in calorie intake and calorie expenditure. The change in the food habits is also responsible for children becoming obese and some even suffering from Type 2 Diabetes. Kids these days are more inclined towards playing computer games rather than engaging themselves in physical activities. Moreover, kids prefer fried food and you cannot get them to eat boiled vegetables and fruits as healthy alternatives. Therefore while deciding on the plan of action in a fundraiser; members of the PTA can look towards healthy snacks as an option.

According to California SB-12 an individual snack should have less than 35% sugar by weight, less than 35% of its calories from saturated fats, and less than 10% of the calorie count from saturated fats. An Elementary school fundraiser snack should be no more than 175 calories while those served at middle schools and high schools should have no more than 250 calories. If a school fundraiser has an entree on its platter, then it should not be more than 400 calories and should contain 4 grams of fat every 100 calories. The snacks served at the fundraiser need to comply with the standards of the federal meal program as well. The California SB 12 was enforced since July 2007 and since then it has become mandatory for the California schools to organize a healthy fundraiser.

Schools can opt for healthy fundraising solutions and therefore place a stricter control on what the children are eating. Parents can relax as they no longer have to worry about their child eating all the fried stuff. In this way fundraising can be fun even under California SB-12.

The purpose of a fundraiser is to generate money and that can best be done when you have such delectable and healthy snacks up for sale at such an event. Snacks sold at a nominal amount can encourage more and more kids to opt participate in the event. Kids always look forward to receive something in return of whatever they give and they would surely be delighted to choose their favorite snacks from a wide spread. It is best to organize a direct seller when it comes organize a healthy fundraiser. Alec Moreland promotes wellness, nutrition and healthy snacks in fundraising to reduce obesity and Type 2 Diabetes in schools. “America”s #1 Healthy Snack Fundraiser” is The Chocolate Alternative.

Title: Packaging Enthusiasts – For Wine Purveyors And Vintners

Article: Typically, it takes anywhere from 6 months (up to 2 years) to convert grapes into wine. It takes about 3 to 5 business days to ship to its destination and 1 day to consume the wine. How long do you suppose it will take for the Styrofoam packaging that came with your wine bottle to decompose? You would never guess it, but it will take 900 years! Is drinking your wine worth it?

Traditionally, the wine industry has long been known for its old-fashioned approach to packaging. In the old days, wine associated with organic agriculture was left dusty on the shelf. But in this new era of eco-luxury, green is something to be proud of. Wineries are devising all kinds of ways to market their eco-practices. However, due to the continued rise of wine brands, wine packaging is changing, predominantly in North America. Wine makers are now taking another gander at how they package their products and to keep the Earth in mind while doing so. Now environmentally conscious, wine producers are enforcing earth-friendly packaging when shipping their products.

Wine packaging companies are now using packaging supplies such as envirofoam cushioning, which is a “green” substitute for regular Styrofoam. Envirofoam is 100% recyclable and as much reliable as the regular Styrofoam when it comes to shipment protection. Recently, a full clam-shell wine shipper tray has just been introduced to help vintners and purveyors of wine meet their green needs. The wine shipper trays, made from recycled newsprint, recycled corrugated paperboard and water, meet and exceed all packaging toxic limitation standards. Not only are they environmentally safe, but they also improve your end product by protecting you from price fluctuations, saving you as much as 75 percent in warehouse space and freight costs.

Yet green-minded wine drinkers still have reason to wonder what kind of eco-bang they are getting for their buck when faced with bottles on the shelf. While biodynamic and organic standards are enforced by a third-party such as Demeter USA and California Certified Organic Farmers, bottles are not always labeled as such, and there are different levels of certification.

A great wine packaging company should dramatically reduce storage space and offer versatility, recyclability and performance. Wine packaging companies understand the passion of wine makers’ business in offering a variety of wine. Providing the right shipping products to fit their wine variety is what wine packaging companies live by.

Title: Is There More To Spanish Wines Than Just Rioja?

Article: Any Spanish wine tour wouldn’t be complete without mentioning Rioja. It has been the epitome of Spanish wine for generations after all. However, Rioja is not the only wine coming out of this country. Here we take a look at how other Spanish wine regions stand up to their famous rival.

Many newcomers to wine confuse Rioja with a grape variety. However, it is, in fact, the northern, inland Spanish wine region from where it is produced. Wines from Rioja are generally made from the Tempranillo grape, although they are often blended with Garnacha (Grenache). This produces a medium to full bodied wine with lots of red fruit. The distinctive woody and, sometimes, vanilla and caramel tones are the result of oak ageing and all traditional Riojas are produced in this way. The prices and styles of Rioja wines vary considerably.

Nearby Navarra might not have the stature of Rioja. However, the quality and style of the wine coming out of this region stands up to that of its neighbour. Made with Tempranillo and Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon, you’ll generally come across similar tasting wines, yet without the price tag.

Moving over to the east coast of the country is Catalunya. Here the small Spanish wine – making region of Priorat produces some exciting wines from the Cariena and Garnacha (Grenache) grapes, as well as Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot. The nearby region of Penedes is known for its Cava.

Further down the coast, the Spanish wine regions around Valencia and Alicante have benefited from increased investment in recent years. Jumilla and Yecla, in particular, have been doing big things with Monastrell (Mourvedre).

Moving inland is the expansive Spanish wine region of La Mancha. Over recent years, this region has seen a shift from producing light to dark skinned grapes. Now, much of the output is red, focusing on the Tempranillo and Garnacha grapes, along with international varieties.

North west of La Mancha is Castilla y Leon. Here you will find Ribera del Duero, which is responsible for producing some of Spain’s most expensive wines. Nearby Cigales is also producing some serious reds. If you like refreshing white wines, try the Verdejo grape from Rueda.

In the north west corner of Spain is Galicia. This Spanish wine region is particularly green compared to other Spanish regions. Rias Baixas, in particular, is known for its refreshing and zingy Albarino. Riberio also produces a lot on the white front.

Finally, to the south of the country is Andalucia. Any tour of the region wouldn’t be complete without tasting some Sherry, which is by far and away Andalucia’s most famous produce.

Hopefully reading this article will have demonstrated that, while Rioja has got an enormous amount to offer in its own right, other Spanish wine regions are also well worth exploring. Louise Truswell works in the wine industry. She has been writing about wine for couple of years and likes writing about Spanish wine. Title: Low Fat Cooking: 7 Tips to Make Your Favorite Recipes Lower in Fat

Article: You can make your favorite recipes lower in fat and calories with a few simple substitutions. Here are seven tips to help you adapt any recipe to your new low fat lifestyle.

1. The first step is to take all of your recipes and make a note of the high fat ingredients. These can include whole milk, butter, margarine, cheese, sour cream, oil and eggs. Make a note of what needs to be substituted and then start to adapt the recipe.

Start making your substitutions slowly. It is going to take a little bit of time to master the art of low-fat cooking. Try substituting half of the low fat options at first and see how the dish tastes. If you are able to reduce the fat without sacrificing flavor, then try to eliminate a little more fat the next time around.

2. If your recipe calls for eggs, you can use low-fat egg substitute. Egg substitutes are available by the carton at your local grocery store. Use 1/4 cup of egg substitute for one egg. You can also reduce the fat by using egg whites instead of the whole egg, however this changes the composition of your dish slightly.

3. Make an easy switch from whole milk to low-fat or fat-free milk. If you’re drinking whole milk on a daily basis or using it for your cereal, you should be making this switch anyway to follow the rules of your low-fat way of eating. If you are accustomed to using whole fat milk, first switch to 2% milk and then work down to fat free milk eventually. This way you can become accustomed to the taste of the lower fat varieties.

4. Mayonnaise, sour cream and cheese can all be substituted with lower fat versions of the same products. Use the same amount that you would with the high fat varieties. Low-fat plain yogurt also makes a great substitute for sour cream. When it comes to cheese, keep in mind that low-fat cheese doesn’t melt as well as regular cheese. You may need to adjust your baking time.

5. Eliminate excess butter and oil by using cooking spray to prepare eggs and other items in a frying pan. You can save a lot of fat calories this way and will hardly recognize the difference. The clean up after using cooking spray is a lot easier as well.

6. You can also eliminate butter and oil in sweet baked goods by using applesauce. Use a cup of applesauce or pureed fruit for every cup of oil or butter required in the recipe. You can experiment with different flavor combinations and come up with many varieties of your favorite baked goods.

7. Your meat choices can also play a big part in how much fat a dish contains. Use extra lean ground beef (such as 97% fat free) instead of the full fat variety. Try substituting ground turkey for beef for an even lower fat option. If you aren’t a fan of the flavor of ground turkey, try mixing the ground beef and the ground turkey together.

By using these simple substitutions, you can easily reduce the fat in your diet. The flavors of your dishes won’t change a whole lot but your waistline will thank you. Find coupon codes for quality discount cookware including discount calphalon cookware – when available.

Title: A Quick Lesson on Water Purification Technology

Article: Water purification technology has come a long way, but many groups (particularly the environmental ones) think it still has a long way to go. Most of the methods of water purification that are in use today have been around for many years. Some were developed before the turn of the century. One was even used in Ancient Babylonia.

Distillation was the first attempt at water purification technology, even though the systems were not originally designed for that purpose. The concern of the ancients was not removing contaminants from the water supply. Water-borne illnesses were around, but no one knew what bacteria were. They used distillers for alcohol.

Distillation methods of water purification are good for certain purposes, but for drinking, there is concern about stomach problems, because there is a lack of minerals and an unhealthy pH level. Certain contaminants with a low boiling point are not removed through this process, only vaporized.

Reverse osmosis was considered a big step forward in water purification technology, but it’s really not much better than distilling. It just costs more. It is one of the methods of water purification used by treatment facilities, along with a multitude of other steps. There are a number of industrial applications. The removal of minerals prevents early equipment corrosion.

The biggest advantage of reverse osmosis methods of water purification is in the area of desalination or removing salt from sea-water. Additional steps, including re-mineralization, must be used to make the resultant drinkable, but without RO, it wouldn’t be drinkable at all. It’s too expensive and wasteful for most homes and it doesn’t remove the chemical contaminants that concern most of us.

Because the treatment facilities can only do so much, the majority of today’s water purification technology has been developed for “point-of-use” or in the homes. Pitcher filters are the least expensive. They can remove chlorine, lead and improve the taste and smell. The tiny filtration unit has a short life span, so even though initially inexpensive, the cost per day is higher than in other devices.

Multi-media block and activated carbon filters are often referred to as the best water purification technology available, because nearly every contaminant can be removed by them, including dangerous by-products of chlorination disinfection.

Multi-media blocks are one of the few methods of water purification that can remove microscopic “cysts”. Those tiny creatures float into the system at various points, are nearly impossible to detect and cannot be removed by most treatment methods. If ingested, they can infect the intestines causing severe illness and even death. Those at highest risk are the very young, the elderly and people with existing health problems, because of an already weakened immune system. Most of use would think we had food poisoning or the stomach flu, because the symptoms are similar and we’d be able to fight it off in a few days.

Multi media methods of water purification can also be used to balance mineral content and pH levels. The better home systems make use of this highly advanced water purification technology.

Multi stage systems are the most effective and yet they are one of the most affordable. Learn more about water purification technology by visiting http://SafeClearWater.com and see our most recommended home water solution.

The Adventure of Cooking Food

Author: Mike Selvon
Title: The Adventure of Cooking Food

Article: Think about what life would be like if it were not for the ability to cook food. Cooking food is something some of us take for granted.

There are some individuals, rare as they may be, that could burn water. But thankfully, for the most part, anyone can cook a meal. All you need is a recipe, some cooking utensils, a means of making the food and you are ready to begin.

If you find yourself at a loss as to what to cook then consider first what type of cuisine you are in the mood for. There are free recipes for cooking food anywhere you look. Soup cans, magazines and the internet boast a virtual smorgasbord of dining delights by offering up recipes.

Take a moment, think about what you are craving and then find a recipe. Make sure the ingredients can be purchased locally.

The second step in cooking food is reading through the recipe and making sure you have the correct cooking utensils. Yes, it is possible to improvise on some utensils but a fork does not take the place of a knife.

By reading through the recipe, you can see exactly what tools you will need for the job at hand. This is also the step where ingredients are checked off.

There is nothing worse than being in the middle of it and realize you have forgotten a key ingredient. As with utensils, some ingredients can be substituted but there are some that are fundamentally important and cannot be switched out.

Thanks to such handy equipment as the microwave or pressure cooker, the time to cook can be cut down considerably. Our society has not reached the point technologically where with a push of a button the food magically appears.

Yes, there are packaged foods such as the types soldiers use in the field, but the average citizen does not want to drink powdered milk or re-hydrated beef paste.

For now we have to use the means we have on hand so if a recipe says that it takes twenty minutes to cook, you cannot speed it along by doubling the heat.

The lesson here about cooking food is pretty simple. Know your recipe, make sure your ingredients are on hand and check to ensure that you have the proper cooking utensils. It is important to take your time and enjoy what you are making.

Cooking should be a chance to experience new foods and bring people closer together. There is an art to making food and a sense of accomplishment to be had from creating something yourself.

If you take the time to try it, you might find yourself trying new things in all aspects of your life. Making food is an adventure and one that brings its own sweet rewards. Mike Selvon portal offers free cooking information. Find out more about the joy of cooking food, and leave a comment at the healthy cooking blog.
